Bangla Sahib was originally a bungalow –
Many people consider it a temple of Sikhs, but in reality it used to be the bungalow of Raja Jai Singh. He was a ruler in the 17th century. The bungalow was called Jaisinghpura Palace. The place where Guru Bangla Sahib is built today was earlier called Jaisinghpura, which is now known as Connaught Place.
The 8th Sikh Guru lived in this bungalow –
It is said that the 8th Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Har Krishna, lived in this bungalow. That year an epidemic of smallpox and cholera spread among the people. The eighth Sikh Guru then started treating people by giving fresh water from a well in the bungalow. But later he also got infected with this disease and died. Raja Jai Singh then dedicated this bungalow to the eighth Sikh Guru.
The lake has the properties of curing diseases –
After his death, Raja Jai Singh built a small pond over the well. It is believed that the water of this pond has the properties of curing diseases. Sikhs from all over the world come here and take water from the pond, which they also call ‘Amrit’.

If you have ever been to a Gurudwara, you must have seen that food is served here for free without any charge. This is called langar. Believe me, the food of langar is very tasty. You will be surprised to know that the hall of Bangla Sahib is so big that 800-900 people can sit and eat langar together. It is estimated that 35 to 75 thousand people eat langar here every day. The langar starts every day at 5 am and continues till late night. The good thing is that anyone can visit the kitchen and help prepare the langar. The kitchen is open 365 days a year.
The cheapest diagnostic centre – After feeding thousands of people over the years, the centre has now opened a low-cost diagnostic centre to provide affordable healthcare to the poor. The MRI scan, which costs thousands in private hospitals, is charged for just Rs 50 here. The diagnostic centre has also opened a kidney dialysis hospital. Interestingly and surprisingly, there is no cash or billing counter in the complex as patients are admitted here for free. People coming from outside Delhi can stay in the rooms of the gurudwara and eat in the langar hall.
